Applying Previous Experience to This Role

The interviewer asks how experience from your previous role prepares you for the responsibilities of this one, expecting you to map concrete past work onto what the target role actually requires rather than give a generic career summary.

What's evaluated

  • Whether you can identify the real responsibilities of the target role (owning a high-scale service, mentoring, cross-team system design) and tie a specific past accomplishment to each
  • Use of a concrete, structured example (Situation / Task / Action / Result) instead of a list of skills — e.g. scaling a payments service from X to Y RPS via caching and async processing, and why that maps to this team's scaling problems
  • Transferable non-coding skills where the role expects seniority: cross-functional collaboration, incident response, mentoring juniors
  • Self-awareness: generic claims like "I'm a fast learner" with no backing example read as filler
