Zomato SDE Intern Interview Experience

I recently had the opportunity to interview for a Software Development Engineer (SDE) Intern position at Zomato. The process consisted of three rounds: two technical rounds and one HR round. Here's a detailed breakdown of my experience:

Round 1: Technical Round 1

The first technical round began with a focus on Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA). I was presented with a Dynamic Programming (DP) problem that involved finding the optimal solution to a problem with overlapping subproblems and optimal substructure. While the problem was challenging, I managed to arrive at an optimized solution after some hints from the interviewer. They were particularly interested in my approach, my thought process while deriving the solution, and the time-space tradeoffs.

Following the DSA question, the interviewer shifted to a resume discussion. They asked about my past projects and internships, focusing on how I had implemented certain features and solved challenges during my experience. Specifically, they wanted details on the technologies I used and the impact of my contributions. They also asked some follow-up questions about the ThoughtVine project and my role in it, emphasizing the individual responsibility I had taken for its development.

Round 2: Technical Round 2

The second technical round was more intense, delving deeper into my technical skills. The interviewer started with Graph Algorithms, presenting two medium-to-hard-level problems.

  • The first question required implementing a shortest path algorithm with a specific constraint, testing my ability to modify classical graph algorithms like Dijkstra or Bellman-Ford.
  • The second question involved a topological sort use case, coupled with edge-case handling and understanding cyclic dependencies.

Once we finished the DSA portion, we moved on to DBMS concepts. The interviewer asked me detailed questions about ACID properties. They tested my understanding of consistency and isolation, with examples requiring me to explain how transactions maintain these properties in real-world scenarios. There was also a detailed discussion on NoSQL databases, including their advantages, limitations, and use cases. I was asked to compare NoSQL to traditional relational databases and explain scenarios where one would be preferred over the other.

This round also included another resume deep dive, similar to the first round but more specific. They probed further into my contributions at ShareChat, especially regarding event validation and cost optimization. Questions around my work with Databricks and BigQuery were discussed in-depth, particularly my approach to data migration and how I ensured accuracy in large-scale data handling.

Round 3: HR Round

The final round was an HR discussion with the VP of Technology. This was less about technical expertise and more about understanding my personality, motivations, and aspirations.

The VP asked me about:

  • Why Zomato? I highlighted my interest in working for a tech-driven company solving real-world problems and the scope for impactful contributions.
  • Challenges faced in past projects: I narrated specific instances where I encountered roadblocks, how I tackled them, and what I learned from those experiences.
  • Long-term career goals: They wanted to understand how this internship fit into my broader career plan.

The conversation also veered towards Zomato's work culture and the kind of projects I might get to work on. The VP shared insights about the company's tech stack and how interns are given opportunities to contribute meaningfully.

Final Thoughts

The interview process was rigorous but rewarding. The technical rounds tested my problem-solving skills and understanding of core concepts like DSA, DBMS, and system design, while the HR round focused on aligning my aspirations with Zomato's goals. Overall, it was a great learning experience, and I left the process feeling more confident about my skills.
